We are delighted to see more and more music programs holding summer camps!
In Haiti, summer music camps, especially for those of limited means, are often the only time students or teachers will get lessons during the year. As such, these opportunities are crucial to the growth and development of both teachers and students.
In 2018, thanks to our generous supporters, BLUME Haiti gave out over $10,000 in scholarship aid to enable gifted students and teachers from around the country to take advantage of the presence of an international group of teachers. Though none of the foreign teachers go to Haiti under the auspices of BLUME Haiti, we are very happy to work with them to assure the best possible results for young musicians throughout Haiti. In recent years, volunteer teachers have come from France, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, England, Poland, Iceland, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, Columbia and, of course, the United States.
All profit from this extraordinary mix of social, civic and musical collaboration - for many of the Haitian students, this is the first inkling they get of the larger world beyond the confines of their city and schools. They begin to realize the common ground and connections they have with people from all over the world and this is wonderfully empowering. We have also been so pleased to see that, more and more, there are Haitian teachers able to work at a very high level. This is an inspiration not only for their students but also for the international volunteers.
