We here at BLUME Haiti have a busy summer ahead of us! In addition to a number of board members traveling to Haiti to teach in summer camps sponsored by various music programs across the country, we will be sponsoring three very special events at two of these camps:
#1 Violin Pedagogy Workshop (Cemuchca Institute of Music: June 21-July 10)
BLUME Haiti has provided scholarships to 15 violin teachers from 10 programs throughout Haiti to have an intensive violin pedagogy workshop, with Paul Manulik, founder of the Princeton String Academy. Topics will include basic setup for beginners and a guided exploration of teaching techniques for young players. We hope that this will have a dramatic impact on the level of violin teaching and playing for these programs!
#2 International Oboe Workshop (Cemuchca Institute: July 1-10; Holy Trinity Music School: July 10-25)
BLUME Haiti will co-sponsor, with Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA) Haiti’s first International Oboe Workshop during summer camps at the Cemuchca Institute of Music and at the Holy Trinity Music School. With faculty from the United States and Brazil, BLUME Haiti has committed to providing scholarships enabling EVERY oboist in Haiti we can find to take advantage of this remarkable opportunity! As of early June, 14 young oboists have signed up for the workshop – we are thrilled! As part of this initiative, we have closed our GoFundMe Oboe campaign and we are delighted to report that we have been able to purchase and/or repair FOUR oboes to take to Haiti this summer. Oboes are a rarity in Haiti – this donation will enable more students in more programs to begin to learn to play this beautiful instrument. Many thanks to all who helped us on our way!
#3 Luthier Workshop (Holy Trinity Music School: July 11-25)
BLUME Haiti will partner once again with Luthiers without Borders to offer a string instrument repair workshop. Monika Gapinska and Julio Folio, who were with us last year, will be joined by Haitian luthier Garfield Hylaris, AKA Tchoupy, to train a new group of beginning luthiers and to offer an intermediate level course for those who started this important work last summer. We will offer scholarships to 15 students from 13 different programs this summer enabling most schools with string programs to have someone who can maintain their instruments in playing condition.
In addition to these workshops, BLUME Haiti will give camp scholarships to a total of 70 teachers and students from music programs throughout the country enabling them to improve their skills and meet musicians from across Haiti and from around the world. Music can bring people together, can help unlock human potential and can nourish the dreams of people everywhere!
