"Outreach work is a common requirement for a modern orchestra, and I am proud to say that both of the orchestras with whom I am closely associated have a strong commitment to their local community. As music director of Utah Symphony and Principal Guest Conductor at Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, community work features regularly in our schedules and is crucial for engaging people outside the concert hall. BLUME Haiti co-founder and President Janet Anthony was featured in The Appleton Post Crescent, with a special focus on the upcoming National Orchestra Institute, first of its kind in Haiti. The institute is a collaboration with musicians from the Utah Symphony.
"APPLETON - "It started out by accident. It was a dark and snowy and cold winter's night," begins Janet Anthony, telling a story that sounds like it's headed miles away from where it's really going. "There was a little ad in Strings magazine, which is a trade publication for string players ... an ad for a cello teacher for a music festival in Port-au-Prince."I speak French ... I love to travel. I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try."
Give it a try she did. Fast-forward more than 20 years and the Lawrence University music professor has been to Haiti every year since 1996. The impact of those trips, which grew to include more and more students and educators over the years and led to the founding of a nonprofit five years ago, has become immeasurable."

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2nd Annual Salsa in the Snow! This year's event was held at Waverly Beach in Menasha, WI and once again featured popular band Salsa Manzana and Boogie Ballroom Dance. We had a great time dancing and grooving to the music, while raising funds and awareness for music education programs in Haiti. The event also featured a robust silent auction. Thank you to all of the musicians and dancers who donated their time and talents, and thanks also to Waverly Beach for being such great hosts!
