Canes Nicolas (conductor)
Our May concert featured the fine young conductor, Canes Nicolas, in a varied program that included works by Occide Jeanty, Ludovic Lamothe in addition to pieces by Mendelssohn and Schubert.

About Canes Nicolas
Dr. Canes Nicolas is the Director of Orchestral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Missouri Southern State University.
Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he attended L’Ecole de Musique Sainte Trinité (Holy Trinity Music School), where he received his first musical training. He began learning the violin at the age of eight, and has been a member of L’Orchestre Philarmonique Sainte Trinité (Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra) since 2002.
Dr. Nicolas received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he was the Associate Conductor of the symphony orchestra, and one of the pioneers of the campus orchestra. He also holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral conducting from Ohio University and a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He enjoys the opportunity to work with different types of professional and collegiate orchestras, and has been privileged to work with inspirational high school students as a festival clinician for honor orchestras in Missouri, Utah, Nebraska, and Haiti.
Dr. Nicolas has studied conducting in Europe as well as the United States with such teachers as Dumitru Goia, Steven Huang, Keith Lockhart, Dr. Tyler White and Markand Thakar. Prior to joining the faculty at MSSU, he taught at Southern Utah University and Wayne State College.
