HOI 2020

Cap Haitian and the
2020 Haitian Orchestra Institute

A year of anniversaries

  • 350 years since the founding of the city of Cap Haitian

  • 250 years since the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven

  • 200 years since the death of Haiti’s first king, Henri Christophe

  • 10 years since the devastating earthquake that struck just outside of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince

As part of the festivities surrounding the 350th anniversary of the founding of Cap Haitian, we had hoped to announce the HOI 2020 Festival of Classical Music to be held from March 29-April 4, 2020.

With our host, the CEMUCHCA Institute of Music, the Musicians of the Utah Symphony (MOTUS) and their Music Director Thierry Fischer were to return to Haiti once again for a week of instruction, rehearsal and performance with about 100 of Haiti’s most accomplished classically trained musicians. The participants are selected by audition and come predominantly through the network of schools, teachers and students served by BLUME Haiti. Thanks to the enthusiasm and forward-looking stance taken by Classical Movements Director, Neeta Helm, along with participation from BLUME Haiti and MOTUS, Sydney Guillaume was commissioned to write an orchestral work for the occasion. We look forward to hearing this at the next HOI! And, the renowned pianist Boris Giltburg had planned to offer a solo piano recital (music of Beethoven and Haitian composers TBD), and perform Beethoven’s third piano concerto with the Institute orchestra.
